The Unbearable Lightness of Being

Milan Kundera · 1984 CE · Novel · Czech · Contemporary

Tomas, a Prague surgeon who keeps his many women strictly apart from the rest of his life, lets a small-town waitress stay one night and cannot afterwards get her out of his flat or his head. Around the two of them the tanks arrive in 1968, a painter mistress leaves for Geneva and then further, and a Swiss academic mistakes political theatre for weight. Kundera argues the book as much as he narrates it: Tereza arrives carrying Anna Karenina, and the dog is named Karenin.
