Jaromil is a poet before he can write, made into one by a mother who copies down his sayings and keeps him beside her long past the age for it. Adolescent verses, a first affair and the arrival of the revolution in 1948 give his lyricism a public use, and he informs on someone. Kundera's case against lyric poetry itself, told as the biography of a young man never permitted to grow up, and the book that won him the Prix Medicis etranger from exile.
