Dog Years

Günter Grass · 1963 CE · Novel · German · Contemporary

On the Vistula two boys swear blood brotherhood: Eduard Amsel, whose scarecrows frighten their own maker, and Walter Matern, who is supposed to protect him and one winter does not. A black shepherd bitch out of the same country founds the line of dogs that ends in the Führer's bunker, and after the war Matern tours the West calling on everyone who wronged him. The longest Danzig book, and the one that follows the guilt furthest past 1945.
