Cat and Mouse

Günter Grass · 1961 CE · Novel · German · Contemporary

Joachim Mahlke, a Danzig schoolboy with a throat that moves under the skin like a mouse, learns to dive deeper than anyone else to the sunken Polish minesweeper in the bay and furnishes a dry cabin inside it. When decorated U-boat commanders are sent to address the school, he sees at last what will cover his throat. Pilenz, who once put a cat on it, tells the story and cannot get clear of his own part in it.
