Number the Stars
Lois Lowry · 1989 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary
Copenhagen in 1943, and a ten-year-old girl races her best friend down the street past the German soldiers on the corner. Word comes that the city's Jews are to be rounded up, the friend is taken in and passed off as a dead sister, and the household moves north to an uncle's fishing village on the sound where boats cross to Sweden. Lowry built her Newbery winner from a Danish friend's childhood account of the resistance and the crossings.
