In the last summer before high school in Fremont, a thirteen-year-old films skate lines for older boys who barely tolerate him and rehearses a personality in AIM away messages and borrowed slang. His mother paints in a house she shares with her mother-in-law while his father works in Taiwan, and absorbs everything her son cannot say anywhere else. Sean Wang's first feature won the audience award in Sundance's US dramatic competition and is set in the suburb and the year of his own adolescence.
