The staff of a short-term group home for at-risk teenagers hold the place together on routine, jokes and physical restraints, and the supervisor who is best at the work is carrying a history very close to the one a newly admitted girl will not talk about. Cretton drew on a year he spent working in such a facility and expanded his own 2008 short of the same title, which is not catalogued here. It launched Brie Larson, Lakeith Stanfield and Rami Malek and became the reference point for the low-budget American institutional drama.
