A Quiet Life

Kenzaburō Ōe · 1990 CE · Novel · Japanese · Contemporary

Their father goes to California in the middle of what he calls his pinch, and the three grown children keep the Tokyo house running, the daughter Ma-chan writing down how it goes: her disabled brother composing at the piano, the swimming lessons, an instructor whose attention frightens her. Tarkovsky gets read at the kitchen table as though he explained the household. Ōe hands the narration to a daughter and lets her measure the writer.
