Kenzaburō Ōe · 1957 CE · Short Story · Japanese · Contemporary

In the last summer of the war an American plane comes down above a mountain village, and the Black airman who walks out of it is chained in the cellar of the storehouse while the adults wait for the town to say what should be done with him. The boy who narrates and the other children come to treat the prisoner first as livestock in their charge, then as something nearer. It took the Akutagawa Prize while Ōe was still a student at Tokyo.
