The Red Badge of Courage
Henry Fleming enlists in a Union regiment expecting Greek-like struggle and spends the days before his first engagement privately calculating whether he will run. The fighting when it comes is smoke, noise and rumour, and whatever he learns about himself he begins at once to edit. Crane had never seen a battle; he worked from the veterans' accounts in the Century magazine and complained that they said what men did and never what they felt.
