Teach Us to Outgrow Our Madness

Kenzaburō Ōe · 1969 CE · Short Story · Japanese · Contemporary

A very fat man keeps his brain-damaged son beside him at every hour, takes him to the zoo, and believes the two of them share one nervous system. Between outings he tries to establish what his own father did through the war in the sealed storehouse where he sat without speaking, and every witness he finds contradicts the version he has carried since childhood. First of the fictions Ōe built around his son Hikari.
