Identity Card

Mahmoud Darwish · 1964 CE · Poem · Arabic · Contemporary

A quarry labourer answers a registration clerk who has asked for his particulars and supplies them at length: a file number, eight hungry children, a village stripped of its name, a father from a line of ploughmen with no rank behind it. The tone shifts from the flat cooperation of the form toward something that will not be filed. Recited across the Arab world within a year, it is the poem Darwish spent decades trying to be read past.
