Child of All Nations
Still numb from what colonial law has taken from him, Minke is pushed by his mother-in-law and by a young Chinese revolutionary to stop writing in Dutch for Dutch readers and to look at the people beneath him. A journey inland to a sugar-district peasant family whose land is being bought out from under them shows him a country he has never seen. The second volume follows the making of the journalist who would found the first native-run newspaper in the Indies.
