Footsteps
Minke goes to Batavia for medical school and discovers that organising is more use than a stethoscope, founding a native-run newspaper and then a traders' association that grows faster than anyone intended. Three marriages, an expulsion and a colonial state slowly making up its mind about him. The third volume watches Indonesian nationalism being invented by a man who had to invent a readership first.
