Coming out of heart surgery that stopped him for two minutes, a poet addresses his own death directly: white on white, a hospital ceiling, a name he cannot yet read on any stone. Over the length of the poem a body, the Arabic language and a people without a country are argued as though they were one case, with Gilgamesh called in to lose the plant of life again. It is the summit of Darwish's late work and the piece most often set against his early nationalist poems to measure how far he had moved.
