The End of Night

Mahmoud Darwish · 1967 CE · Poem · Arabic · Contemporary

Poems of confinement from the last Haifa years, in which a cell, a curfew and a night that will not lift are handled as ordinary weather rather than as outrage. Against them the speaker sets small durable things, bread and a lamp and a letter that arrives, and stakes the book on their outlasting the dark. It appeared in the year of the June defeat, and Arab readers took the title as a promise the war had just made much harder to keep.
