Leaves of Olive

Mahmoud Darwish · 1964 CE · Poem · Arabic · Contemporary

The first mature collection of a young Haifa journalist writing under house arrest, addressed to the Palestinians who stayed inside the 1948 lines and became a supervised minority in their own villages. Olive, stone and a tended plot stand in for a deed nobody will honour, and the speaker talks to a mother, a father or a jailer rather than to a nation. It made Darwish the poet of a people the new state had renamed.
