Don DeLillo · 1988 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

A boy raised between the Bronx and New Orleans by a mother who cannot hold a household together defects to Minsk, returns, and drifts through jobs and political affiliations that never quite take. In a parallel line, disaffected intelligence officers design a near-miss shooting meant to be blamed on Havana, then go looking for a man who fits the profile. DeLillo built it from the Warren Commission's twenty-six volumes, which he has called the Joycean book of America.
