On the Eve

Ivan Turgenev · 1860 CE · Novel · Russian · Victorian

A general's daughter at a dacha outside Moscow, impatient with the sculptor and the scholar who court her, chooses a poor Bulgarian who means to go home and fight the Turks. Her family will not hear of him, so she marries in secret and prepares to leave Russia, which has offered her nothing worth staying for. Published a year before emancipation and read at the time as a demand for a Russian who could actually do something.
