Smoke
At Baden-Baden, where the Russian colony argues the future of Russia between the tables, a young man waiting to marry a sensible girl meets the woman who threw him over ten years earlier, now a general's wife. The exiled radicals and the court party are given equally short measure, and the affair is conducted under the eyes of both. The satire on all sides at once cost Turgenev friendships across the Russian political spectrum, and he was accused of writing his country off from a German spa.
