A Sportsman's Sketches

Ivan Turgenev · 1852 CE · Short Story · Russian · Victorian

A landowner out shooting in Oryol province stops at one village after another and lets the serfs talk: a singing contest in a tavern, two boys minding horses through the night, a bailiff who has learned to be worse than his master. Nothing is argued and no case is made; the men and women simply turn out to be people, given the same attention as the woods and the weather around them. Alexander II is said to have counted the collection among the reasons for emancipation, and the censor who passed it lost his post.
