Paraja
Sukru Jani farms a hill clearing in the Koraput highlands with two sons and two daughters and owes nothing to anyone, until a forest guard who wants his elder girl finds the pretext to have him fined for timber he cut. The money comes from the village lender at an interest no harvest can meet, and father and sons sign themselves over as bond-servants to work it off while the ground they cleared changes hands. Mohanty spent his working life as a revenue officer among the Paraja and Kondh, and this is the Odia novel of the period that reached readers outside the language.
