Rudin

Ivan Turgenev · 1856 CE · Novel · Russian · Victorian

A brilliant talker turns up at a provincial estate and within one evening has captivated the hostess, silenced her circle and convinced her daughter that a life can be lived for an idea. Asked to act on any of it, about the girl, about money, about a place to sleep, he finds that the words run out. Turgenev's first novel handed Russian criticism its portrait of the superfluous man of the 1840s generation.
