Persepolis

Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud · 2007 CE · Film · Persian · Contemporary

A girl in Tehran cheers the fall of the Shah, then watches the revolution close around her family, the war with Iraq begin, and the veil arrive at school. Sent alone to Vienna at fourteen for her safety, she finds she is nobody's idea of an Iranian and nobody's idea of a European either. Drawn in flat black and white from Satrapi's own graphic memoir, it took the Jury Prize at Cannes and has since become a fixture of university courses on exile and testimony.
