The Campaign

Carlos Fuentes · 1990 CE · Novel · Latin American · Contemporary

Three Buenos Aires law students steal the viceroy's seals in 1810 to proclaim independence, and one of them then rides the whole revolution north through the pampas, Upper Peru, Chile and Venezuela, chasing a marquis's daughter and a set of Enlightenment principles that keep arriving as massacres. A boyhood friend narrates it from the safety of the Plata. First of a planned cycle on the independence wars.
