A Change of Skin

Carlos Fuentes · 1967 CE · Novel · Latin American · Contemporary

Two couples drive out of Mexico City toward Veracruz on Palm Sunday, break down at Cholula and climb the pyramid buried under the church, while a narrator who calls himself the Narrator keeps cutting in to reshuffle their pasts: a German camp, a Jewish exile, a Mexican professor's ambition. Death camp and human sacrifice are laid over the same ground. Banned in Spain, and his most aggressive experiment.
