The Hydra Head

Carlos Fuentes · 1978 CE · Novel · Latin American · Contemporary

A middling official in the Mexican bureaucracy who models his manner on Humphrey Bogart is drawn into a contest between Israeli, Arab and American services over a document listing the country's oil reserves, and finds his face and his name being reassigned around him. Codes, doubles and a superior known only as the Director drive a plot in which every ally draws someone else's pay. Fuentes writing genre on purpose.
