The Stranger

Orson Welles · 1946 CE · Film · Modern / American · Contemporary

A war crimes investigator turns a prisoner loose and follows him to a Connecticut college town, where an architect of the camps has remade himself as a prep school master engaged to a judge's daughter. His one tell is an obsession with the stopped clock in the church tower. Welles cut newsreel of the liberated camps into a domestic thriller, the first American feature to put that footage on screen.
