Kepler

John Banville · 1981 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary

An imperial mathematician with ruined eyesight, a sick family and no money arrives at the castle of a Danish astronomer with a metal nose, and is fed scraps of the observations he needs and no more. Out of the disobedient orbit of Mars he gets an ellipse, and out of a lifetime of horoscopes cast for patrons who do not pay he gets three laws. The second of the Revolutions books, its five parts arranged to answer the geometry their subject was chasing.
