Samskara
In a Brahmin settlement on the edge of a Karnataka forest the heretic Naranappa dies — a man who ate meat, drank, kept a low-caste mistress and dared the orthodox to excommunicate him — and no one will perform his rites or eat until the question of whether he was still a Brahmin is settled. Praneshacharya, the settlement's ascetic scholar and its authority on the law books, searches them for a ruling, finds none, and takes the matter to the god at the temple while the corpse waits. A founding text of the Kannada Navya movement and the novel that carried modern Kannada fiction into world translation.
