Amerika
A sixteen-year-old is shipped off to New York by parents embarrassed that a servant has had a child by him, and sails in past a Statue of Liberty holding a sword. An uncle turned millionaire takes him up and drops him without appeal, after which he works a hotel lift, falls in with two vagrant tramps and is kept in an apartment by a monstrous singer, each descent arriving as a stroke of extraordinary luck. Kafka never finished it, called it in his diary a sheer imitation of Dickens, and it appeared under Brod's title three years after his death.
