Moses, Man of the Mountain
Pharaoh's order to drown the Hebrew boys leaves the palace with a child nobody there can place, and the man who flees Egypt after killing an overseer goes east to Jethro to learn what the rod in his hand is for. Hurston tells the deliverance in Black Southern speech, with Moses as the greatest of all conjure men and the Hebrews arguing the whole way about whether they wanted to go. Written after her Caribbean fieldwork, it reads an Exodus that African American preaching had claimed for a century back through hoodoo.
