Léopold Sédar Senghor · 1956 CE · Poem · West African · Contemporary

At the centre stands a dramatic poem in which the Zulu king Shaka, taken down by his brothers' blades, answers a White Voice that accuses him of murdering the woman he loved, and turns the charge into an account of what founding a nation costs. Around it sit the great river poems, verse letters to a princess, and a postface in which Senghor sets out his prosody and its debt to Serer and Wolof song. He drew the Shaka material from Thomas Mofolo's Sesotho novel and dedicated the poem to the Bantu martyrs of South Africa.
