Patriotism
A lieutenant of the imperial guard, left out of the February 1936 mutiny by friends who meant to spare him, comes home to the wife he married six months earlier knowing he will be ordered to fire on them. The couple spend a last evening in their small rented house, and what follows is set down at the pace of a ceremony. Mishima filmed it himself in 1966, and it rehearses, more than a decade early, the death he chose in 1970.
