The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea

Yukio Mishima · 1963 CE · Novel · Japanese · Contemporary

Through a gap in his bedroom wall a thirteen-year-old in Yokohama watches his widowed mother undress, and then watches a ship's officer come ashore and into her room. The boy belongs to a gang of schoolmates who have ruled that fathers and sentiment are corruption, and they open a file on the sailor as he gives up the sea for a chandlery. Mishima's coldest short novel.
