The Temple of Dawn
Sent to Bangkok on a commercial case in 1941, Honda is taken to meet a small Siamese princess who insists she is Japanese and wants to go home, and he starts reading Buddhist doctrine on transmigration to work out what he is looking at. After the war he is rich, retired from the law, and building a house at the foot of Mount Fuji into which he fits a peephole. The third volume turns the cycle's witness into a voyeur.
