Madame de Sade
Six women talk in a Paris drawing room across eighteen years while the Marquis de Sade is imprisoned, on the run, and at last released: the wife who will not disown him, her mother, who works the courts to keep him locked up, and a pious sister and a libertine countess. Sade never appears. Mishima wrote it to answer why the loyal wife stood by, and Western theatres revive it more than any other play of his.
