In the Country of Last Things

Paul Auster · 1987 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Contemporary

Anna Blume crosses into a nameless collapsing city to look for her missing brother and writes it all down in a long letter home: object hunters working the rubble for salvage, clinics that buy bodies, whole categories of thing and word going out of use faster than anyone can name them. She finds shelter in a disused library among a household of scholars and learns the arithmetic of a place where nothing is ever replaced. The letter is addressed to someone who may never receive it.
