The Phantom of the Opera

Gaston Leroux · 1910 CE · Novel · French · Modernist

Two new managers take over the Paris Opera and inherit a ghost who demands a salary, a private box, and the casting of a young Swedish soprano, and who disposes of anyone who refuses him. Beneath the stage lie five cellars, an underground lake, and a man in a mask who has been teaching the singer to sing. Leroux was a crime reporter, and he built the whole thing on the real architecture of the Palais Garnier and the counterweight accident that killed a spectator there in 1896.
