The Phantom of the Opera

Rupert Julian · 1925 CE · Film · Modern / American · Modernist

Beneath the Paris opera house a masked figure in the cellars promotes a young chorus singer over the resident diva, then takes her down five levels to a black lake and a lair. Chaney built his own skull makeup in secret and kept it out of the publicity stills so the unmasking at the organ would land cold. The sound stage raised for the auditorium stood on the Universal lot for ninety years.
