The Hunchback of Notre-Dame

Victor Hugo · 1831 CE · Novel · French · Romantic

On the feast of fools in 1482 a gypsy girl dances with a trained goat in the square before Notre-Dame, the cathedral's deaf bell-ringer is crowned pope of the fools, and the archdeacon who raised him watches her from the north tower. A captain of archers, a starving poet and the whole thieves' court of the Cour des Miracles close on her by turns, while the story keeps stopping to describe a Paris of towers and roofs that has since been pulled down. The book turned the neglected and half-ruined cathedral into a national cause and led directly to Viollet-le-Duc's restoration.
