Gitanjali

Rabindranath Tagore · 1910 CE · Poem · Indian · Modernist

A hundred and three prose lyrics address a lord who is by turns master, beloved, child and the breath passing through an empty flute. The English book is Tagore's own selection, made from several Bengali collections rather than a rendering of the Bengali Gitanjali entire, and the difference between the two has occupied Bengali critics ever since. Yeats wrote the introduction and the Nobel Prize followed in 1913, the first awarded outside Europe.
