The Guru Granth Sahib
Close to six thousand hymns arranged not by author or by subject but by the raga each is to be sung in, opening with a composition that begins from the numeral one and the statement that the being is one, the name true, and closing with an index of tunes and meters. The compositions of the Sikh Gurus stand alongside verses by Kabir the weaver, Namdev, Ravidas the leatherworker, and the Sufi Farid, admitted without regard to caste or creed, and much of the language is that of a bride waiting on a husband who is everywhere. Compiled by the fifth Guru at Amritsar and installed by the tenth as the community's permanent teacher, it is treated not as a book about a Guru but as one.
