The Dance of Death
An artillery captain and his wife, an actress who gave up the stage for him, keep house in a converted prison tower on a garrison island, approaching a silver wedding neither will mark and cut off from a community they have insulted for twenty-five years. Her cousin arrives as the new quarantine officer and is drawn straight into the couple's economy of grievance, illness, small revenges and card games. Its picture of a marriage as a mutual siege ran directly into O'Neill and, through him, into Albee.
