Anna Christie

Eugene O'Neill · 1921 CE · Play · Modern / American · Modernist

Chris Christopherson, captain of a coal barge and a lifelong hater of what he calls dat ole davil sea, gets word that the daughter he sent to Minnesota relatives twenty years ago is coming east to stay with him. She arrives out of a hospital rather than off a farm, and finds the barge and the fog better company than anything she has known ashore. When a stoker is pulled from the water after four days in an open boat and starts talking about marriage, the terms on which she could accept him become the play's business.
