The Love Suicides at Sonezaki

Chikamatsu Monzaemon · 1703 CE · Play · Japanese · Enlightenment

Tokubei, a clerk in an Osaka soy dealer's, has refused the marriage his master arranged and must give back the dowry, but he has lent the money to his friend Kuheiji, who denies the loan in the street and produces a seal Tokubei reported lost. Ohatsu of the Tenmaya hides him under the verandah of a teahouse while the customers above discuss his disgrace, and puts her foot down to him to ask whether he is ready. Chikamatsu wrote it within weeks of a real double death, and it established the contemporary domestic tragedy and the chanted travel passage that go with the puppet stage ever since.
