Chemmeen

Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai · 1956 CE · Novel · Indian · Contemporary

On the Kerala coast the fisherman Chembankunju borrows from Pareekutti, a young Muslim trader, for the boat and net that will make him his own master, and his daughter Karuthamma and the lender grow close over the years the debt runs. She is married instead to Palani and taken to another shore, in a community that holds a fisherman's life at sea to depend on the chastity of the wife waiting on land. Thakazhi's best-known novel took the Sahitya Akademi award and, through the 1965 film made from it, carried Malayalam fiction to audiences that had never read any.
