The River Between

Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o · 1965 CE · Novel · East African · Contemporary

Two ridges face each other across a valley in the Gikuyu highlands, one holding to the old rites and one gone over to the mission, and Waiyaki is schooled by both in the hope that he can reconcile them. A girl from the Christian household insists on the initiation her father has forbidden. Ngugi's first written novel, turning on the circumcision controversy of the 1920s.
