Southeast the Peacock Flies

Anonymous · c. 220 CE · Poem · Chinese · Classical

A clerk's wife, faultless at the loom and in service, is sent back to her own family by a mother-in-law who has simply decided against her, and her husband swears on the road that he will come for her. Her brother presses a wealthy match on her while that promise still stands, and a wedding is prepared around a woman who has given her word elsewhere. The longest narrative poem of the Han, and with the Ballad of Mulan one of the two pieces the tradition calls the twin jewels of yuefu.
