The Courier for Hell

Chikamatsu Monzaemon · 1711 CE · Play · Japanese · Enlightenment

Chūbei, adopted into an Osaka courier house and trusted with other people's money, wants to buy out the contract of Umegawa of the Echigoya before a country customer does, and the sealed consignments in his charge are the only sum within reach. Breaking a seal is a capital offence, and a rival in the same room is goading him about his empty purse. The pair make for the Yamato village where the father who gave him up still farms, in a snow-covered travel scene that is among the most performed passages in the puppet repertory.
